Pandemonium broke out Tuesday in Abuja as armed men reportedly gunned down seven police officers.

The incident reportedly occurred at Galadimawa Junction, just off the international airport road.

The suspected armed men were stopped for search by the police when they opened fire on them. This resulted in the killing of seven of the officers while one was seriously injured.

According to an eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, the gun battle led traders around the roundabout to run for safety while others sustained varied degrees of injuries.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police commissioner, Sadiq Bello confirmed the tragic incident.

The police chief was, however, unable to immediately provide full details of how it occurred, saying the FCT police spokesperson, Anjuguri Manzah, will provide further details shortly.
