...Warring factions unite for 2019

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  has inaugurated the state, local government and ward executives of its Anambra State chapter after several months of disagreement and legal battles.

The feuding factions, Advocate Nigeria learnt,  have following the peace efforts of the national and South East zonal leadership of the party agreed to sheath their swords and collectively work for the interest of the party in the 2019 elections.

South East Zonal Vice Chairman, Austin Umahi, while inaugurating members of the state executive, asked  them to hit the ground running and recover Anambra State for the party.

It was an air of hope for the opposition PDP in Anambra State following the inauguration of the executives as the party is now positioned to contest various elective positions in the coming elections.

Umahi challenged the new executives to reconcile all aggrieved members and open up to new ones insisting that the party has a strong root in Anambra State.

Umahi said the party consistent with obedience to the rule of law waited for the courts to dispense with legal impediments before inaugurating the state's grassroots party structure.

"There was a judgment and we had to respect that judgment because PDP is not for rascality and that was why we respected the court order. When they had their elections, we needed to respect the court orders but Anambra state realised there was need for all us to move forward.

"I am sure that because the party is a restructured party, an opposition party that must have to regain whatever we have lost in the state, we are going to regain it because we have all the strategies to regain all the lost grounds," Umahi said.

He charged the inaugurated party leaders to live to their billings, noting that "to whom much is given, much is expected. It was not good you were elected more than one year ago yet you were not inaugurated and it wont be good to go to the national convention without Anambra state delegates."

Umahi further challenged the inaugurated executive to go and deliver their respective wards and local government area, stressing that Anambra was originally a PDP state.

"Henceforth internal democracy is enthroned and has become effective in Anambra state and the party will no longer condone impunity," he said.

Umahi, who fielded questions from newsmen after the inauguration, said it was not true that the party buckled and succumbed to Governor Nysome Wike's intimidation on the use of Port Harcourt as venue for the PDP national convention.

Umahi said that what happened that led to Wike's outburst was a misunderstanding, common with organisations as PDP, but which has been resolved with maturity as a family problem.

He said: "There was nothing like intimidation, nobody intimidates the party and he (Wike) did not in anyway intimidate the party. There are bound to be conflicts and conflicts are about resolutions but the most important thing was the maturity of the party where it was resolved in our NEC meeting.

"It was a family affair and in a family there are bound to be misunderstanding which was what happened and today we are stronger. There was nothing like intimidation, you can get angry and say something but the important is that today the party is stronger and we are going to the national convention stronger."

Anambra State Chairman, Ndubuisi Nwobu, in his speech after the inauguration, extolled the national and zonal leadership of the party for their peace efforts, which made the event possible several months after the executives at all levels were elected.

He pledged his commitment towards ensuring the success of the party in forthcoming elections saying the party was now well positioned to move forward.

Nwobu, however, urged the party leadership to give him the opportunity to re-engineer the party in order to ensure the victory of their candidates in forthcoming elections.

Meanwhile, Umahi has made it clear that by the successful inauguration of the state executive, the former caretaker committee remained dissolved and therefore "ceases to function."
