The saying that " when the going gets tough, the tough gets going" is the most appropriate way to describe the dogged and untiring efforts of the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and by extension the Ikeoha Foundation which has remained resolute in her determination to build the people and empower communities, despite the biting hard times which the country is presently facing.

Dating back to his days as president of his town union and Executive Chairman of Aninri Local Government Council, the spirit of  philanthropy had always been in Senator Ekweremadu.

As Chairman, Board of Trustees of Ikeoha Foundation. He appreciates that "giving is a virtue and that education is an equalizer". Therefore, the best way to give a lasting gift is to educate the people, which in turn will translate to large scale empowerment of the society. Evidently, he demonstrated it with the uncountable number of people he has been able to transform their lives through various forms of empowerments before the establishment of the Non Governmental Organization, the Ikeoha Foundation.

The foundation commenced a partial scholarship and bursary award Programme way back in 2004 and has since empowered over twenty thousand brilliant, well behaved and indigent under graduates from, Enugu west Senatorial District, Enugu North and Igbo - Eze North Local Government Areas with school fees and other academic motivational gifts.

The Foundation commenced the full time Scholarship award Programme in 2014, which entails the payment of fees to benefiting students from first year to final year. Annually, each benefitting student goes home with the sum of four hundred thousand Naira. In the words of Senator Ekweremadu "this is to ensure that whether I am in office or not, alive or not, beneficiaries should be able  to completely pay their school fees from year one to final year".

Aside from scholarships and bursary, the foundation has over the years transformed the lives of men, women, youths and widows through their various programmes like secondary schools quiz completions, adult literacy Programme and the free ICT training Programme, which has in no small way upgraded the standards of education  and capacity in Enugu West Senatorial District and by extension, Enugu State. It is worthy of note that as a result of this giant stride from Ikeoha foundation, most adult learners are now able to send text messages to their children, friends and business clients.

Other areas, where the Foundation is positively touching lives, include the widowhood Outreach Programme, Agro Farmer's Programme, Women Empowerment Programme, Anti Child Trafficking Programme and the Special Training for Graduate Engineers at Science Equipment Development Institute ( SEDI), Enugu.

The Foundation has also used the instrumentality of the football competition under the Annual Soccer Competition for Local Government Areas in Enugu West Senatorial District to export soccer talents to the world, as most of the youths who participated in the competition are today renowned soccer superstars.

The community Health Outreach Programme of Ikeoha Foundation has equally  brought succor to the people, as eye care specialists constantly examine, treat  and donate eye glasses to deserving patients in the District.

The foundation also makes it possible for Oral health Specialists and Dentists to always be on hand to educate villagers on Oral health issues. Efforts are equally made from time to time to treat and donate malaria drugs to communities in the Senatorial District.

All these efforts by the Foundation are in accordance with its mission which is to provide for the basic educational, health and economic needs of families living in poverty to support the government - sponsored interventions.

Last year's award ceremony which took place at Aguobu - Owa, Ezeagu Council headquarters was so colorful and well attended. The gallant match past by the adult learners and the strength of their vocabulary during their speeches and recitations on their study experiences were spectacular.

Different Women groups  and cooperative societies from Enugu West were also beneficiaries as they were empowered during the occasion  with sewing and grinding machines to help boost their businesses. Eye glasses, brail machines and computer sets were also given out to deserving constituents. Indeed, the ceremony was a display of philanthropy at it's best.

So join us as we do it again this Saturday, the 14th of October, at Udi Local Government Council Headquarters. The Chairman of the Ikeoha foundation, Distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu and Wife, Dr Mrs Nwanneka Ekweremadu will be in attendance. All the Graduating adult learners, all the scholarship and bursary award beneficiaries, invited women groups and cooperative societies are also expected.

Traditional rulers, Political Appointees, Presidents of town unions, friends of Ikeoha and the clergy are all cordially invited. Come let's support a genuine endeavor to uplift our people.

Going forward, let's join hands with Senator Ekweremmadu and Ikeoha foundation to empower and build our people by creating a just and equitable society in which all individuals, families and communities will have meaningful opportunities to improve the quality of their lives for themselves and future generation.
