The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has won all  the 17 chairmanship positions contested during Saturday’s local government election in Enugu State.

According to Professor Mike Ajogu SAN, Chairman of Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), who declared the results on Sunday evening, the PDP won all the 17 Chairmanship seats and 258 Councillorship positions in the state.

There are 260 wards in Enugu State, and, according to ENSIEC, voting did not take place in two of the wards – Obioma and Eke wards in Udi Local Government Area.

Eke Ward is the home of some APC stalwarts in Enugu State, including the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Godfrey Onyeama.

The PDP swept all the 258 wards which were declared by the electoral commission.

The development meant that only the PDP members now occupy elective positions at all levels of government in Enugu State.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress has rejected the results announced by ENSIEC.

The Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, described the polls as “a sham.”

Reacting to the development, he said, “Like I predicted yesterday (Saturday), the ENSIEC Chairman, Dr. Mike Ajogwu, has rubbished himself with this sham he put together in the name of election just to satisfy his paymasters, the PDP.

“It is quite unfortunate that there was widespread of violence and bloodbath in Enugu today, simply because ENSIEC wants to please the PDP.

“There was no result sheet in all the polling units, yet Dr. Ajogwu called what he did election.”

Ajogu speaking with newsmen after declaring the result said the election his commission conducted was "very free, fair, reliable and credible" insisting that the exercise could not be faulted.

"Somebody had called on phone to complain during the election that the result sheet was taken away but at this point the result sheet was with the Divisional Police Officer, DPO,  who was assigned by the Commissioner of Police to convey them to the Local Government. Some even said the result sheets sent were fake, nobody can complain about anything fake in this election. It is not true that materials were sent late to the local government areas," Ajogu said.
