As part of efforts to decongest Nigeria’s overcrowded prisons, the Federal Government, through the National Stakeholders on Prison Reforms has freed 951 inmates across three geo-political zones of the country, after meeting the conditions for freedom.

This came as no fewer than 430 inmates gained admissions into the National Open University of Nigeria NOUN, in addition to two that have enlisted for doctorate degree programmes. Three others are said to be on the verge of completing their doctorate degrees in other varsities in the country.

Public Relations Officer of the Service, DCP Francis Enobore, disclosed this in Abuja at a joint news conference with the Executive Director, Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action PRAWA, Dr. Uju Agomoh  ahead of February 1  public presentation of Survey Reports on the Nigerian Prisons.

He said: “At the same time, 951 others have been  freed by the Nigerian Prison Services due to the intervention of the national stakeholders which paid various fines imposed on them by various courts as conditions for their freedom."

“In the education sector, I am pleased to announce that 430 of our prisoners are running various degree courses at NOUN. The new reform efforts allowed them to access university education in order to make life out of prison meaningful for them,” he said.

According to him, the prisoners were allowed to enroll for university education as part of a new package by the Federal Government to make life out of prison meaningful for them.

He said the Open University was gracious in admitting the prisoners for their higher education to make them better citizens, noting that well-meaning Nigerians, religious and corporate bodies had been assisting in funding ex-convicts’ educational needs.

The PRO said: ‘’Since Nigeria spends N450 per day in feeding each of the over 65, 000 inmates, the current prison management decided to open 17 new farm centres.’’
