Workers of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu (FNHE) Thursday shutdown activities in the hospital as they embarked on indefinite strike following unresolved industrial disputes.

In a strike notice addressed to the Medical Director, Dr. JoJo Onwukwe, and presented to journalists during a press conference by the leadership of the Joint Health Sector Unions in the hospital, the workers said the hospital would remain shut until their four major demands were met.

The strike notice was signed by the Chairman of Senior Staff Association (SSA) of Nigeria, FNHE chapter, Comrade Anthony Ozurumba; Vice Chairman of National Association of Nigerian Nurses (NANNM) and Midwives, Comrade Sims Nwagwu; Secretary of SSA, Comrade Onu Bank-Anthony; Chairman of Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Comrade Eze Matthew; Secretary of NANNM, Comrade Ugwu Eric and Secretary of MHWUN, Comrade Oduburu Friday.

The workers  listed their demands to include "payment of all withheld salaries and arrears from February 2017 till date; payment of all withheld promotion arrears; payment of all accumulated teaching allowances to the affected staff; and immediate enrollment of our Hospital into Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) payment platform".

The labour leaders stated that they had exhausted every possible peaceful means  of resolving the dispute but neither the management of the hospital nor the parent Federal Ministry of Health took any meaningful step towards addressing them.

"We had earlier issued 21 days Ultimatum letter dated 11th January 2018, which expired on 1st February 2018. We followed it up with 7 days Ultimatum to the management of the hospital and that has equally expired and yet there was no response from any quarters,"  Comrade Anthony Ozurumba told journalists.

Efforts made to get the reaction of the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Onwukwe proved abortive as he was not in his office when our correspondent visited, just as his phone lines were switched off.
