Lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, has been reportedly arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja on his way to Morocco.

It was learnt that the senator and other passengers had boarded the plane and the aircraft was about to taxi when policemen were said to have stopped the take-off, asking the passengers to disembark from the plane.

His arrest may not be unconnected to his refusal to report at the Police Headquarters in Kogi for questioning.

Melaye took to Twitter to announce his arrest.

“I have just been arrested at the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport on my way to Morocco for an official engagement sponsored by the Federal Govt after checking in,” he said on Twitter.

Melaye, when contacted on phone, gave more insights into his arrest and detention at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport.

He said, “‎My self and the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and others were to be on an official trip to Morocco but while some have gone through the Lagos airport today, others are to depart tomorrow.

“I got to this airport I was checked in and was already in the lounge waiting for departure. Immigration officers invited me that there is a directive from the police that I can’t travel; that I am on their watch list. And I said it was not true, that the INTERPOL said they had not issue an alert on me. I opened INTERPOL’s website and showed them the denial. But they insisted that it was based on the directive from the police.

I was disembarked and asked me to go to their office (at the airport). They snatched my passport but I snatched my thing back from them. I got it back! I’m still here with them. They circled me and said they were waiting for further instructions from the police.”

The police had on April 3, warned  the Senator to appear in court ahead of his arraignment on May 10, 2018.

He is to be arraigned on a case of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms already filed before a Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State.

But the lawmaker failed to honour the invitation and a court summon issued him by the Force on March 24.

According to the police, the Senator is wanted on grounds of criminal offences of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms.

Melaye’s summon follows the arrest of two men in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, on January 19, after they confessed to having committed various crimes such as kidnappings and armed robbery.

They also disclosed that the Senator had handed them a bag containing firearms.

The police while parading Kabiru Seidu and five other suspects who escaped from a detention facility in Lokoja, said it is in the interest of Senator Melaye to voluntarily report to the Police in order to forestall the execution of an arrest warrant issued against him.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Jimoh Moshood, explained that the suspects whose confession indicted Senator Melaye and Mohammed Audu as sponsors of thuggery in Kogi will be arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lokoja on May 10, 2018.
