Mr. Peter Mbah
A lawyer and financial analyst, Mr. Peter Mbah, was on Wednesday, elected as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate for the 2023 general election in Enugu State.
Mbah, former Chief of Staff to then Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, emerged victorious during the Party’s primary election conducted at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu.
Mbah also served as former Commissioner for Finance under the Chimaroke Nnamani administration.
He scored 790 votes to defeat other aspirants in the election. Chikwado Chukwuka and Senator Ike Ekweremadu got one vote each. Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa polled three votes, while Chijioke Edoga garnered nine votes to come second in the election.
The other five contestants included Professor Hillary Edeoga, Ken Onoh, Professor Barth Nnaji, Senator Gilbert Nnaji and scored nil vote.
Only three void votes were recorded in the primary election.
The Chairman of the PDP Gubernatorial Primaries Electoral Committee in Enugu State, Senator Ambuno Zik Sunday, who declared the result, described the process as “transparent, credible and peaceful.”
Sunday said that 812 delegates were accredited for the exercise with 807 votes cast.
He said that at the close of accreditation, two delegates from Oji River Local Government Area were absent.
The electoral committee chairman said that independent observers, including officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were on ground to monitor the exercise.
Nineteen aspirants purchased the gubernatorial nomination form of the party.
In his acceptance speech, the governorship candidate pledged to serve with humility and build on the success of the current administration if elected.
According to Mr. Mba, "it is our vision to transform our state with the support of the people of the state."
Mr. Mba, who hails from Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state is the Chief Executive Officer, Pinnacle Oil Nigeria Ltd.
Hours before the Wednesday exercise, the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Captain Evarest Nnaji and Joseph Onoh all withdrew from the primary election.
Shortly before voting commenced, nine other aspirants pulled out from the race, saying they were now supporting Peter Mbah, who is the choice of the power brokers in the State.
The aspirants made the announcement individually at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, venue of the primary election throwing their support behind Mbah.
They include: Abraham Onyishi, Tochukwu Ude, Erasmus Anike, Nwabueze Ugwu, Rev. Ralph Nwoye, Prof. Jehu Nnaji, Beloved Dan Anike and Gabriel Ajah.
However, Professor Barth Nnaji, who also bought nomination form to contest the governorship primary was conspicuously absent at the venue.
A former Governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo had on Tuesday given an indication of who would emerge as the party's candidate when he revealed that Mbah was selected after due consultations as the popular choice to succeed Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
