At least 31 persons have died in a stampede at a programme organised by a Pentecostal church, Kings Assembly, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the casualty figure.

The stampede occurred at the Polo Club in Port Harcourt Saturday morning when a large crowd of persons attempted to push through a small entrance.

It was gathered that guests began arriving the Polo Club as early as 6:30am for the event slated for 9am, but met the gate locked.

However, at about 8am, some sports men arrived and opened the small entrance to have their training session, only for the crowd to see it as an opportunity to access the tent that was mounted by the church for the program.

Iringe-Koko told NAN that the church, located in GRA in Rivers capital, had invited members of the public to an event where it would share some gift items to its members, including food stuffs.

She said that the event was held at the Port Harcourt Polo Club, a bigger facility to accommodate the anticipated crowd, including the underprivileged.

The PPRO stated that though the programme was billed to start by 9a.m., some of the participants arrived there before the time.

The command’s spokesman said that the church leadership was distributing the palliative to the participants before the time at the venue which led to the stampede.

She said the stampede must have occurred when the people who had gathered struggled to have items, resulting in the death of the 31 persons. (NAN)
