The Director-General of Peter Obi Campaign Organization has said that the substantive Vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party will be announced within Wednesday (today) and Friday.

Featuring on Channels Television on Tuesday, Okupe, who is currently Obi’s running mate (place-holder), said that Senator Datti Baba Ahmed and others are being considered for the position.

He also said that the alliance between the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate and Kwakwanso's New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has been “dead” for over four weeks.

Okupe accused Kwankwaso of trying to take advantage of Obi’s popularity.

“The Labour Party and its presidential candidate has long withdrawn from that conversation.

“It was the NNPP that continued to try and benefit from the traction of Peter Obi.

“As an elder statesman, out of maturity I decided we will not take them on media-wise, so we kept quiet. But they kept going on.

“That alliance has been dead for over four weeks. I was the leader of the team that went to talk with Kwankwaso and we reached a deadlock,” he said.

Okupe said the presidential candidate himself will announce his running mate, adding that Obi and the LP were looking out for a young vibrant politician from the north with a measure of intellect, sound background, pedigree and education.

“Senator Datti is being considered. Others are being considered too. These things will be decided this week [it’s going to be an announcement from Peter Obi] very very likely.

“I’m sure about Senator Darti being the running mate but I know that this matter will be concluded before Friday.

“Senator Datti is being considered along with other people whom we’ve engaged and talked with.

“The emphasis is this, we’re looking for a young vibrant politician of northern extraction with a measure of intellect, sound background, pedigree and education. That is what we’re looking at,” he said.

In order to beat the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the Labour Party and Peter Obi had picked Dr. Doyin Okupe to temporarily hold the running mate position until a substantive vice presidential candidate is announced.
