The Senatorial primary election of the People's Democratic Party, PDP,  for Enugu East, which commenced on Tuesday, was concluded Wednesday with former governor of the state, Senator Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani clinching the party's ticket.

The incumbent Senator Gilbert Nnaji  was beaten to distant fourth position, truncating his ambition to return to the upper legislative chamber.

Senator Nnamani, who was a member of the Nigerian Senate from 2007 to 2011, is aspiring for another term on the platform of the PDP.

Declaring the final result of the primary election after delegates from Nkanu West cast their votes at Agbani Wednesday, the Returning Officer, Engr Okechukwu Igbonekwu, said Senator Nnamani emerged as the party's flagbearer with 601 votes.

Mr.  Chinedu Nneji came second with 84 votes, David Nkwuo Ngene came third with 74 votes and Senator Nnaji scored a total of 69 votes to occupy forth position.

The electoral panel had earlier  announced its decision to declare the winner from Tuesday's voting exercise where delegates from five of the six local governments areas that make up the senatorial district cast their votes by the modified open ballot system,  explaining  that from their consultations and study of the electoral guidelines,  a clear winner actually emerged Tuesday.

But the move was however strongly opposed by delegates from Nkanu West LGA,  who insisted on exercising their franchise.

This, he said, necessitated the conclusion of the exercise on Wednesday.

In the final result,  Lawrence Eze also scored 25 votes while  Agu Gab Agu and  Mbah Joshua scored 8 votes each.

At Enugu North Senatorial district, Senator Chukwuka Utazi was returned as the party's candidate in an affirmative primary election being the sole aspirant of the PDP in the exercise.
