A 93-year-old monarch of the Nnewi community in Anambra State, Kenneth Orizu, on Thursday led other traditional rulers in Anambra South Senatorial District to protest what they called incessant harassment of the Innoson Motors’ boss, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Chukwuma, who is from Nnewi, has been having a running battle with the EFCC over a business transaction that went awry with a bank.

The monarchs, under the aegis of the Anambra South Senatorial Traditional Rulers Forum, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the rift, adding that the matter had lingered for too long.

Protesting at the palace of Igwe Orizu in Nnewi, the monarchs said it was an irony that the EFCC was hounding a man who had won no fewer than four national honours for his entrepreneurial acumen and created employment for about 15,000 people like a common criminal.

Speaking on behalf of the monarchs, the traditional ruler of Isseke in Ihiala LGA, Emmanuel Nnabuife, said Buhari’s intervention had become expedient so as not to allow the situation to degenerate to a bigger crisis that could be difficult and costly to resolve.

The monarch condemned the involvement of the EFCC in a business dispute, describing it as antithetical to known jurisprudence.

He said, “The royal fathers of Anambra South Traditional Rulers’ Forum are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to look critically into the roles and activities of the EFCC in the ongoing business dispute between a bank and Innoson Nigeria Limited.

“Innocent Chukwuma is personally known to us as an illustrious son, who has kept clean records in his business enterprises from inception till date. Any attempt to tarnish his image is capricious and ill-motivated.

“It has become obvious that the EFCC is not following laid down procedures and judicial precedence in the prosecution of the alleged trumped up charge against our son, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, and his company, Innoson Nigeria Limited.

“As leaders and elders of the land, knowing full well the consequences and crisis the roles and activities of the EFCC may cause, we have decided to use this medium to call on you, Mr President, to caution the EFCC on this matter so as not to allow this little crisis to degenerate into a bigger crisis that will be difficult and costly to resolve.”

He recalled that Chukwuma had suffered much in the hands of the anti-graft agency, especially when he was bundled out of his house in Enugu like a common criminal, describing it as a slap on ingenuity that Chukwuma stood for.
