Dec. 2019 deadline to weed out unqualified teachers stands –Adamu

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, on Monday ruled out the possibility of extending the December 31, 2019, deadline for disengaging all unqualified teachers from the nation’s education system.

Adamu, who spoke at the 2018 Alaghodaro summit to mark the second year of the Governor Godwin Obaseki administration in Benin, Edo State, maintained that teachers who had yet to acquire the requisite qualification must do so or leave the system.

 Represented by the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Prof. Hamid Boboyi, the minister said, “We must stop recruiting unqualified teachers into the system, especially when we have many qualified teachers roaming our streets without regular jobs.

 “The National Council on Education under my chairmanship has given a clear directive to all our unqualified teachers as well their employers to acquire the requisite qualifications or disengage from teaching on or before December 31, 2019. This remains an irrevocable order of the council,” he said.

Adamu further disclosed that over N258b had been expended on basic education in the country.

This is just as he noted that the issue of over 10 million out-of-school children was a challenge in the sub-sector.

“In addressing this, the ministerial strategy plans to curb this is being actively pursued by all agencies of government. The Almajiri Integration Programme and the Basic Education for All have been re-tooled to meet the need of stakeholders while the Basic Education delivery for all supported by World Bank has become effective and taken off in earnest,” he added.

Earlier, Obaseki explained that the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation programme was introduced to take care of governance and strengthen the sector.
