The sudden strike action embarked upon by petroleum dealers in Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra states Tuesday morning  is likely to jeopardize the smooth conduct of Saturday elections.

The leadership of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association, IPMAN and  Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD,  withdrew their services Tuesday in protest against the unlawful take over of their offices by the police.

A factional leader of IPMAN, whose tenure reportedly expired last December had allegedly sought and obtained the protection of the police to forcefully take over the offices of the union in the South East and other parts of the country.

In enforcing the directive from above, the Enugu state police  command Monday met with leaders of IPMAN and directed them to comply with the directive to vacate the office for the factional leader to take over.

Angered by the development, the union directed it's members to shutdown their stations with effect from Tuesday.

As a result all the petrol stations in the South East were under lock and key as early as 7am paralyzing  activities in the zone.

Many motorists, who  were caught unawares have been forced to pack their vehicles while economic activities in Enugu state capital and other cities in the South East had been grounded.

Sources said Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has waded into the crisis as he reportedly met with the aggrieved petroleum marketers to seek ways of resolving the dispute without delay.

He was said to have pleaded with them to reopen their stations on order not to jeopardize the Saturday election but it  could not be ascertained if they agreed to do so.

There are fears that the strike, if allowed to linger, would negatively affect the elections in the zone.
