Maristella Okpala, `Miss Earth Nigeria' launches pet project

Maristella Okpala, the `Miss Earth Nigeria 2018 Queen’, on Thursday  in Lagos Launched her pet project themed "PICK THAT PLASTIC AND STAY IN SCHOOL" .

She said she would sponsor 20 children drop outs back to school through her pet project.

Queen Maristella told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)/(NTA) that she took up the responsibility through her Advocacy tagged: #WasteToWealth which she launched at the Morit International School, Ajegunle, Lagos.

According to Okpala, the project is in conjunction with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for a Cleaner Environment and Better Education Initiative.

The goal is to support 10,000 children from dropping out of school by 2025 she said.

The pet project of the Miss Earth Nigeria 2018 "PICK THAT PLASTIC AND STAY IN SCHOOL" Programme is targeted to achieve eight out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The goals include: Goal (1) No Poverty, (3) Good Health (4) Quality Education (6) Clean Water and Sanitation (8) Good Jobs and Economic Growth (12) Responsible Consumption and Production (13) Climate Action and (17) Partnership for the Goal.

Queen Maristella said her pet project would focus on donating waste bins for waste sorting, sensitising the children on proper waste management habits and sponsoring a child.

“I will support many children in Nigeria who have dropped out of school because their parents can’t afford school fees anymore,’’ she said.

The children are to pick plastic wastes (bottles) in return be sponsored via the RecyclesPay Educational Programme.

The sponsored children and their parents expressed appreciation and also promised to be part of the recycling program to start their individual businesses.

NAN also reports that the Miss Earth Nigeria 2018 donated a 240 litres waste bin for the collection of recyclables to the school.
