Former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo Saturday said that the worst corruption is to rig an election and subvert the will of the people.

He spoke in Enugu after casting his vote just as  Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma placed a curse on politicians that would rig the election, saying that they would not have peace and God will make the seat ungovernable for them.

Senator Nwobodo who spoke shortly after he cast his vote in his polling unit at Amechi Ward 2, Enugu South Local Government Area, said there it was a serious crime and corruption for anybody to  brazenly steal  the mandate of the people in a democratic contest.

"The worst form of corruption is not allowing peoples’ votes to count. When you don’t allow peoples’ votes to count, it’s very very, dangerous because this is a big country that will lead Africa. We have to entrench democracy in this country,” he said.

On the aparthy observed in Saturday's election, Nwobodo  said: “There could be one reason. The best reason could be that there is no contest in Enugu State.

“Secondly, people felt that their voting did not count; what they voted for in the last presidential and National Assembly elections did not happen, and so people are not happy.

“In the country really, people are unhappy; that must have accounted for the voter apathy," he said.

Speaking with our correspondent in an interview, Rev. Chukwuma, who is the Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), warned that God will make the seat ungovernable for any politician that would get to the seat through rigging and manipulation.

"The will of the people should be respected in this election. INEC should know that these election is put for people to chose leaders they want and not who the INEC will rig into office.

"It is wrong for INEC to condescend so low for rigging of any election which people will be thinking it will be a success and be rejoicing.

"I am saying if it is not the will of God, whatever INEC has done it will boomerang and backfire," he said.

While charging the military and other security agencies to allow the people of River state to choose the leaders of their choice, he however, cautioned President Buhari not to set the country on fire that would consume the entire nation.

Chukwuma however, commended the INEC for the peaceful conduct of election in Enugu state. "We thank God that in Enugu we had a peaceful election; no killings, no rancor and everything went well but not withstanding I will score INEC 80 percent in the sense that delivery of materials were not apt enough to the different location."

The former governor of Enugu state, Senator, Chimaroke Nnamani said that the election afforded him and his people an opportunity to express their preference through the power of votes.

"I welcome another opportunity to express our preference through the power of votes. I for once came out very early I was enthused about a process that will provide me an enabling environment, me and my people to reinforce our belief on the success of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, a reaffirmation, acclamation of what he has done for us in Enugu state. It is an opportunity to provide him another four year to continue his magic. I came out very early and together with my people we voted for both the governorship and the house of Assembly election.

"It was quite peaceful, free and fair. For all of us we cherish that opportunity to reaffirm the leadership of our governor. Now it is an opportunity for him to have a second go at it. All told Enugu is truly in the hands of God," Nnamani said.
