INEC declares Gov. Ugwuanyi winner of Enugu guber poll

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has been declared winner of the Enugu State gubernatorial election held on Saturday, March 9.

The State Collation/Returning  Officer for the governorship poll, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, who is the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, declared Ugwuanyi winner after collation of results from the 17 local government areas in the state.

He said  that the governor, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in all the 17 Local Government Areas and polled 449,935 votes to defeat his closest rival and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 10,423 votes.

Ugwuanyi scored  95.54 percent of valid votes cast, while the APC candidate polled 2.21 percent.

Prof. Ahaneku disclosed that reports from the Local Government Collation Officers in the 17 LGAs showed that the exercise was peaceful, free, fair and deviod of violence, adding that it was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Electoral Act and INEC rules and regulations. 

The All Progressive Congress, APC has hailed the election saying there was nothing to contest. 

Speaking with newsmen after the results was officially declared,  Adolphus Udeh, APC Agent for Gubernatorial Election applauded the victory of Governor Ugwuanyi saying the election was transparent.e

"The election was free and fair and the electoral process was transparent, we don't have anything against it," Udeh said. 

On the decision of the APC governorship candidate, Senator Ayogu Eze to boycott the election, Udeh said the party was not aware of any boycott as the candidate had no powers to single handedly declare a boycott.

He said that the APC fully participated in the election in the state and therefore has nothing against the outcome or the process.

Meanwhile, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has congratulated Governor  Ugwuanyi, on his reelection as governor of Enugu State, describing his victory as comprehensive and well-deserved.

Ekweremadu, who took to his social media handles, @iamekweremadu, to congratulate Ugwuanyi upon his declaration as the winner of the governorship contest by the State Collation Officer, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, said it was a reward for one good term.

“I join the good people of Enugu and our great party, PDP, in congratulating Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on his comprehensive victory and reelection as Governor of Enugu State.

“This is a well-deserved reward for one good term and purposeful leadership, for he has done very well. He is in touch with the people and the State has enjoyed peace.

“It is victory for the masses of Enugu and I can only wish him even more fruitful, peaceful, and eventful new term as he continues on the path of excellence”.

Ekweremadu thanked the people of Enugu for their overwhelming support, noting that “clearing all the State House of Assembly seats in addition to the entire National Assembly seats in the State also won a fortnight ago is a further confirmation that Enugu is totally PDP and firmly in the hands of God”.
