Catholic Priest shot dead by suspected herdsmen in Enugu

Tragedy struck in Enugu again Thursday evening as a Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Paul Offu was shot dead by bandits suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

The incident occurred along Ihe -Agbudu road in Awgu local government area of Enugu state in the evening of Thursday August 1, 2019, according to a statement issued by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu.

Fr. Offu who hailed from Okpatu in Udi local government area of the state was until his death the Parish Priest of St. James Greater Parish, Ugbawka.

Though details of how he was attacked was scanty by press time, it was learnt that the deceased was driving along the Ihe -Agbudu road when the gunmen energed from the bush and shot sporadically into his vehicle. 

The State Police Public Relation Officer, PPRO, Ebere Amaraizu could not be reached for his comments on the development by press time. 

The police spokesman later confirmed the incident in a telephone chart with The Advocate saying investigations had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of the reverend father. 

He said it was too early to point accusing fingers at fulani herdsmen stressing that it was after the ongoing investigation that the actual culprits could be identified.
