As part of international engagements with counterparts in other countries, a Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has met with officials of the US Department of State in Washington DC to solicit their partnership with her legislative agenda.

Senator Ekwunife is representing Anambra Central Senatorial District in South-East Nigeria and Chairman Senate Committee on Science and Technology.

A statement dated September 1,2019 and made available Sunday night by the senator’s Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Kingsley Ubani, described the meeting as “one of several engagements the Senator intends to initiate with the USA and other countries on the development of international coalitions and mutual collaboration for the benefit of Nigerian citizens.”

“The discussions at the meeting centred on Senator Ekwunife’s Legislative Agenda, including the increased participation of women in politics, education of the girl child, educational opportunities for children in IDP camps, underaged marriage and rape prevention”, the statement explained.

“Senator Ekwunife also solicited their cooperation and partnership with Nigeria in improving Science and Technology in Nigeria, especially in the areas of research and development. She assured them of her commitment, as Chairman Senate Committee on Science and Technology, to provide the enabling environment for USA to successfully partner with Nigeria in development of Science and Technology”, the statement added.

Department of  State officials led by Mr Otis Holloway, in their response, commended Senator Ekwunife’s interest on these issues of global importance and her determination to confront them.

The officials assured of their willingness to partner with her “in these areas of common interest, especially given the fact that these are issues which not only benefit her own constituency but also positively impacts both the South East Zone and Nigerian citizens in general”, said the statement.
