An attempt by a 200 level female student of the University of Nigeria, UNN, Nsukka to commit suicide after drinking the deadly Sniper Insecticide was foiled on Saturday as she was rushed to the hospital before she could give up the ghost.

The Enugu State Police command while confirming the incident in a press release by its spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, Sunday, said the victim was identified as Chinwendu Odoh of about 24 years old.

She hails from Enugu Ezike in Igboeze North Local Government Area of the state and studying Microbiology in the university.

"The police said: "On that fateful day 7/9/19 in the morning, the victim identified as one Chinwendu Odoh of about 24 years old from Enugu Ezike in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu state and who is also said to be a 200 level Microbiology student of University of Nigeria Nsukka had allegedly drank substance believed to be sniper insecticide with a view to taking her life before she was promptly rushed to Royal Cross Hospital Nsukka where she is being revived.

"Full scale investigations are on now by the operatives of the Nsukka Division of the Nigeria police, Enugu state command to unravel the mystery surrounding the attempted suicide just as information from some sympathizers are pointing towards depression over an age-old unresolved issue(s). The victim is now responding to treatment."

However, it could not be ascertained if she left a suicide note before drinking the poisonous substance.

A final year student of UNN from the department of English and Literary Studies, Chukwuemeka Akachi, had in May this year committed suicide after stating the reason for his action on Facebook.

Barely a month after the incident, a final-year student of the Department of Religion and Culture, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Samuel Elias, 25, also committed suicide by taking an insecticide, sniper.

The National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control,  NAFDAC had following incessant cases of suicide through consumption of Sniper, ordered total ban of the insecticide as part of efforts to stem the tide.
