The Lagos State government Tuesday  quarantined a Chinese national suspected to have coronavirus  even as it has commenced contingency plans by activating outbreak protocols in five general hospitals, Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and a community based treatment in preparation for major outbreak of the disease.

Briefing journalists Tuesday in Lagos, , the Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi said the Chinese national came in last night through Ethiopian airline and was intercepted at the airport and had been taken to the isolation centre in Yaba where his sample has been collected for testing.

“Within the next four to five hours we will know if  it comes  out negative, we will release him to go about his business, but if it turns out positive, he will be quarantined and commence management of the disease on him. We will also release the result as soon as we have them," Abayomi said.
Meanwhile the Chinese man was said to have been coughing profusely at the airport last night.
Continuing, he disclosed that the state was already putting contingency plans in place in the event that the outbreak skyrocketed.
“We presently have 100 isolation centres, but we have put plans in place to increase it to 1000. With time we will know whether to activate this or not. We are also preparing five general hospitals and our IDP camps as plan B. We hope no other case is recorded, but should there be, we are more than ready to handle outbreaks.
“The federal government has activated testing sites at every international airport, including that of Lagos. So as it stands now, we have two centres in Lagos where Coronavirus tests can be done. This is because Lagos is strategic."
The commissioner added that the state has been preparing for this day, adding that it has an extremely sophisticated laboratory with level three, and certified by international bodies. “People criticize us that we are not prepared, but what they don’t know is that we have been waiting for this day.”
Speaking on the iindex case, he explained that the patient was fine and responding to treatment but just that he feels lonely being the only one there and far away from his people.
He explained that three tests have so far been carried out on him, noting that the first  test which specimen was COVID 19: one Chinese quarantined  in Lagos from his chest area where the virus dominate the result showed a baseline of the virus, while the second showed the virus has reduced.
“But the third result showed the virus has gone back to baseline."
The commissioner further stated: “We will keep watching him because the virus fluctuates. Whenever the virus eventually leaves his system, we will be happy to release him. I am sure he will want to travel back to Italy immediately after been released.
"He has a mild to moderate case of the virus at the moment. His breathing is fine although he has slight cough. We know he is lonely at the moment because his ward has 14 bed space but we have reached out to his embassy. They have provided him with phone, internet, books, and Italian food.
"In his ward, there are 14 beds. He is the only one in there, he is being lonely.
His consulate has sent him internet, food, books to entertain him, all he has will be destroyed when he lives.
"We will keep him for sometime until when his viral presence has come down to zero.
When he is not secreting the virus, we wll live him for more time, then release him,
"We are tracing airlines he had contacts with.
There were 159 persengers on the flight. We reached 51. People are very mobile, the rest may have gone back or gone to other states."
