Doctors, nurses and other hospital workers at the emmergency ward of University Teaching Hospital, (UNTH) Enugu are now  living in fear  following the death of a COVID-19 patient in the ward.

There are fears that medical personnel in the  emergency ward within the days the patient was admitted may have been exposed to the virus.

The hospital management is said to have maintained a deaf ear to the cimplaints made by the affected personnel as it has declined to shutdown or fumigate the ward and trace the contacts for isolation.

The management has carried on as though nothing happened making the ward danger point for both workers and patients.

It was gathered that the 41-year-old man was referred to UNTH from a hospital in Lagos, admitted Sunday May 30th to the hematologist for Cancer and fluid in the chest.

He was admitted into the emergency ward and treatment commenced.

Sources said his treatment involved anti biotics and drainage of fluid from the chest.

The patient, as learnt, was managed by the haematologists and cardio-thorasic surgeons.

Based on the travel history of the patient having come from Lagos, the screening for COVID-19 was requested.

Unfortunately the patient died on Thursday June 4 and his corpse was taken home by his relations.

Next day Friday 5th result came out positive for COVID-19.

It was also gathered that same Sunday another patient, a woman from Lagos  who was an old patient of the hospital being treated for cardiac and diabetes, was admitted.

She reportedly came with cough, fever and breathlessness. She was also referred from Lagos.

"Initial diagnosis of sepsis was done to rule out possible COVID-19 infection.

Her results also came out positive and she is currently receiving treatment at the UNTH isolation center," the source said.

Meanwhile, the management of the hospital led by the Chief Medical Director, Dr Obinna Onodugo is yet to issue any official statement on the development.

Media officer of the hospital , Mr Cyril Keleze, said when contacted Monday that the management was already assessing the situation and would make an official statement soon.
