The Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), cameras at the Lekki tollgate were said to have crashed on Tuesday October 20, 2020 as a result, was not able to capture the incident between soldiers and #EndSARS protesters at Lekki tollgate.
The company in charge of the Toll gate, Lekki Concession Company (LCC) told the Judicial Panel of Inquiry (JPI) set up by the Lagos State Government to investigate the incident that nothing was captured because the camera went off before the incident
The video, which might have helped the investigators solve the mystery about what really happened, was submitted by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), the firm in charge of operations at the facility.
There had been allegations between the Nigerian Army, which sent the soldiers and the protesters over the alleged shooting incident that sparked off violence across the country, including the number of casualties.
Managing Director of LCC, Abayomi Omomuwa, who submitted the video footage to the panel, which is also investigating complaints of human rights abuses against members of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), dashed the hope of the panel by the damning evidence.
“I can confirm that inside here is the video footage that our surveillance camera was able to record for the 20th of October,” he said.
Omamuwasan, who claimed that the company had three surveillance cameras located at Sandfill, Ikoyi Bridge and one at Chevron, however told the panel that the camera did not capture the shootings at the toll gate.
“The surveillance camera didn’t capture the shooting. It stopped recording around 8pm,” he said, adding that the fire outbreak at the Ikoyi Bridge affected the CCTV cameras and it stopped recording.
Omamuwasan, who explained the situation further, said the reason for the power outage, at the gate, was because the company complied with the curfew and asked staff to leave in adherence with the directive of the state government.
For this reason, all the staff working at the gate were withdrawn following its takeover of the toll gate by the protesters.
