• Curfew imposed on Effium community, 7 lives lost to feud, residents flee

Ebonyi Police Commissioner Aliyu Garba on Sunday arrested Chairman of Ohaukwu Local government area, Clement Odah and lawmaker representing Ohaukwu North state Constituency, Chinedu Awọ over the recent killings and destruction of properties in the community.

Also arrested were some 30 other major stakeholders from the community, including Coordinator of Effium Development Centre, Sunday Agbo and his Effium South DC Counterpart, Eucharia Ogwale.

A former Chief Press Secretary to the Governor and Special Assistant on Market Development, Emmanuel Uzor, as well as his counterpart in Charge of Parks Development, Emmanuel Igwe were also arrested.

The former lawmaker representing Ohaukwu North state Constituency and Governor David Umahi’s Special Assistant on Youth Development, Frank Onwe was also among those arrested.

The arrests, it was learnt, were on the orders of the Deputy Governor, Kelechi Igwe.

Governor Dave Umahi, on Sunday, imposed a curfew on Effium community as part of efforts to restore peace and order to the feuding community.

The state Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Orji Uchenna Orji, who announced the curfew in a statement, said: "The Governor of Ebonyi State,  His Excellency, Engr. Chief David Nweze Umahi FNSE FNATE deeply frowns at the unabated violence and wanton destruction of lives and  property in Effium community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

"In his determination to restore peace and order, the Governor has   imposed a curfew in Effium community from 4pm to 8am on daily basis with effect from Sunday, 24th January, 2021,  untill normalcy returns to the affected community.

"The Governor further directs the Security Agencies to ensure the strict enforcement of the curfew and to deal decisively with any person or group of persons involved in killings and or destruction of property of the people no matter whose ox is gored."

Meanwhile, reports from Effium community said the residents have fled their homes following Saturday resurgence of the age-long communal war between Effium people and their Ezza settlers.

No fewer than seven persons were reportedly killed and many seriously injured in the  latest confrontation which was triggered by a disagreement among members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.

Leadership crisis in the union has been identified as the cause of the problem which saw the faction of the union from Effium clash with the faction from Ezza Effium.

Sharing formula for the revenue generated from the park is believed to be the bone of contention.

He said the clashes spread into the community leading to casualties on both sides.

Houses, cars and other property were also torched as the crisis spilled over into the community.

There was pandemonium in the community as the crisis escalated with many deserting their homes to safe neighbouring communities.

Also, health workers and staff of the National Population Commission who were on assignment in the area were reportedly caught in the crossfire.

Following the incident, Ebonyi State Government, on Saturday, announced a ban on activities of the Union in Effuim Motor Park in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Conflict Resolution in the state, Mr. Stanley Okoro Emegha, who announced the ban in Abakaliki said the clashes engulfed the entire Effuim and Ezza Effium communities because the Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers in the area allowed politicians to meddle into the affairs of the union.

He said that Ohaukwu Local Government authorities would be mandated to take over the park where the incident emanated.

“It was not something that happened on the grounds of IPOB, neither was it a politically related matter; it was a national transport union case dragging the leadership of a motor park.
