The dreaded jihadist sect Boko Haram has killed at least seven soldiers in a fresh attack in Borno State.

The development was corroborated by a number of reports on Wednesday.

At least seven Nigerian soldiers were said to have been killed after the insurgents sprung an ambush.

Reports from Maiduguri say troops of the 153rd Task Force Battalion in the Marte local government area were caught by surprise when the insurgents attacked them.

An armed clash erupted, during which seven soldiers died and many others were wounded.

Reports and eyewitness accounts say the insurgents escaped following the attack.

Boko Haram has been involved in a bloody insurgency that has spanned over a decade in Nigeria. Also, it has spread its atrocities to neighboring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a military response.

More than 30,000 casualties and nearly three million have been displaced in a decade of Boko Haram’s terrorist activities in Nigeria; according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Also, violence committed by Boko Haram has affected some 26 million people in the Lake Chad region; while displacing 2.6 million others, according to the UN Refugee Agency.

Meanwhile, Turkey has condemned the abduction of more than 40 teachers and students; as well as the killing of a student in an armed attack in Niger State.

“We are deeply saddened by the news that more than 40 teachers and students were abducted and one student was killed during an attack perpetrated by an armed group on a Government boarding school in the Kagara region of Niger State located in Nigeria today (17 February),” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“We strongly condemn this heinous attack targeting innocent students. Also, we wish those missing students and teachers to rejoin their families safe and sound as soon as possible,” it added.

The ministry also conveyed its condolences and sympathies to the people and government of Nigeria.

At least one student was killed and more than 40 teachers and students were kidnapped; as armed bandits attacked the school on Wednesday.
