Former Governor of the Central Bank, CBN, and frontline governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Anambra State, Prof Charles Soludo, has relived his experience during the attack on him at a rally which led to the killing of four persons including three of his police guards on Wednesday.

Soludo who spoke barely 24 hours after after the attack by gunmen said the operation lasted for more than 10 minutes.

Gunmen had opened fire during a town hall meeting at the Isuofia community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing the three security aides.

But Soludo, who spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today narrated how gunmen attacked him.

“When it was all over, it took several minutes, 10 or 15 minutes of continuous gun battles going back and forth of stopping, starting again.

“By the time we all came back, we saw three bodies lying in the pool of their blood. They were the three policemen. May God grant their soul eternal rest.

“At first I thought, maybe the policemen were shooting in the air. Until I began to hear people screaming and all of that and everybody just scampered for safety.

“Just as I was about to wrap up the town hall meeting and said finally for them now to open up for comments and answers, there were gunshots," he said.

While commiserating with the families of the slain officers, Soludo promised to support them, even as he described the attack as senseless, noting that no political office should be worth the blood of a chicken, how much a human life.

Soludo further prayed for the quick release of the Anambra State Commissioner for Public Utilities, Emeka Ezenwanne, who was abducted during the attack.

The former CBN governor described himself as a “village boy” who feels safest in his hometown of Isuofia compared to anywhere else in the world. He noted therefore that the attack came as a surprise to him.

Following the attack, he said that “the DSS, army and police swung into action and I thank them for this.”

The governorship hopeful also noted that thereafter he received over a thousand calls from prominent Nigerians including the Sultan, members of the National Assembly and even his political opponents.

Asked what he perceived to be the motive of the attack, Prof Soludo refused to speculate saying that “there are all kinds of theories. I do not want to preempt the investigation that is ongoing.”

He said he would be shocked if it was aimed at him adding  that he would await the outcome of the investigation.

He remarked that violence is “not the Anambra way” and added that among that “we remain friends with everybody contesting for the office.”

Meanwhile, the police authorities have arrested three more suspects in connection with the attack on Soludo.

The arrest was confirmed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ikenga Tochukwum, in a statement in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
