Ogochukwu Okenwa, a notorious leader of the gang that allegedly led the armed attacks that claimed the lives of two traditional rulers and burning of several houses belonging to natives of Oruku community  in Nkanu East local government area of Enugu State, has been arrested.

Okenwa, a middle-aged man, had been on the wanted list of security agencies in the state over his involvement in  series of gun attacks  on Oruku and Umuode communities, which had been engaged in boundary dispute that was resolved by the Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi-led administration last year.

Sources told  The Advocate that  Okenwa was apprehended by members of Oruku Neighboorhood Watch at Oruku while trying to receive money from one of their alleged sponsors.

Following an intelligence gathered regarding his whereabouts and the place he was asked to receive the fund, an ambush was laid for him.

He was apprehended by the vigilante members immediately he was conveyed to the place on a motorcycle.

The suspect was taken to the Army checkpoint on the road leading to the community from where policemen from  State Criminal Investigation Department took him to the State Police Command Headquarters.

During interrogation, Okenwa was said to have admitted his involvement in the major attacks on Oruku and Umuode communities.

The source said "Okenwa has already made useful confessions in which he named major sponsors of the Oruku crisis and has assured of his readiness to assist security operatives in their investigations.”

When contacted,  the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

He said: “The suspect, alleged to be connected with the clashes in Oruku community, was arrested and the case is under investigation.”

It would be recalled that during the visit of the members of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Oruku crisis led by Justice Harold Eya to the community on February 18, 2021, they were attacked by armed men who fired several shots at the panel members while inspecting the razed premises of Chief Raymond Okenwa, one of the leaders of Oruku community.

The panel members scampered to safety before they hurriedly left the community with the aid of security operatives.

The arrested suspect was said to have led the gunmen that attacked members of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry which was  set up by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to investigate the recent crisis in Oruku, which led to the death of the monarch, Igwe Emmanuel Chidiebere Mba.
