The people of Enugu East Senatorial Zone of Enugu State on Sunday recommitted themselves to the rotation of the governorship slot among the three zones of the state, saying that the next governor of the state should come from their zone.

In a meeting held in Enugu attended by the former Senate President, Ken Nnamani; ex-Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders from the zone, the group appealed to the people of Enugu West and Enugu North Senatorial zones, to support in 1999, when the current democratic dispensation took off, Enugu East Senatorial zone produced the governor in the person of Chimaroke Nnamani, a medical doctor-turned politician.

His successor, Sullivan Chime, hails from Enugu West Senatorial zone, while the current governor is from Enugu North Senatorial zone.

The people of Enugu East Senatorial zone, argues that since the rotation principle has gone round the three senatorial zones, the new circle of rotation should again begin from their zone.

It will be recalled that some political office holders from Enugu North and Enugu West Senatorial zones have stoutly countered this position, a development which has elicited controversy and confusion in the state’s political landscape.

But at Sunday's meeting the people and stakeholders of Enugu East Senatorial zone endorsed the zoning of governorship of Enugu state, stating that 2023 belong to Enugu East Senatorial zone.

The people made the endorsement at a meeting convened by  Speaker Ubosi at the palace of Odezuligbo-Nike, HRH Igwe Julius Nnaji.

Addressing the gathering, Senator Ken Nnamani stated that his political party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had already made announcement that the Party will only give the ticket for the 2023 governorship ticket to an aspirant from Enugu East Senatorial zone.

Supporting the resolution that 2023 governorship ticket is exclusive to Enugu East Senatorial zone, former governor of the state, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani said that the agreement should be respected, noting that the entrenched zoning arrangement has engendered peace and tranquility in the state.

Speaker Edward Ubosi,  stated that for peace sake, the zoning arrangement should be respected in the state.

“The people of Enugu East senatorial zone have gathered to say that we are not ready to fight, and on the issue of 2023 governorship, it is our turn. We are not fighting with anybody on that.

“We want other senatorial zones to support us. It started in the Chimaroke time, and at the end of his tenure he handed over to Sullivan and at the end of Sullivan he handed over to Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and it is necessary that at the end of the Ugwuanyi’s tenure it will come back to us,” Ubosi said.

The meeting urged the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in the state to announce as APC did that the party will cede it’s governorship ticket to Enugu east senatorial zone.
