Petroleum tanker accident claims 1 in Enugu

An accident involving a petroleum tanker at Ekulu Bridge, Abakpa Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area, claimed one life on Saturday.

According to an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, the tanker fully loaded with petroleum product lost control and fell into a ditch.

When contacted, the Executive Secretary, Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mrs Nkechi Eneh, confirmed the incident.

Eneh said that the SEMA team promptly responded to the distress call in order to apply safety measures toward safeguarding lives and property.

She said that the state government provided a crane and manpower for the removal of the vehicle, evacuation of the product and reopening of the road for vehicular and human movements.

The executive secretary appealed to residents of the area to be calm as well as cooperate with the efforts of the state government and the emergency response stakeholders in addressing the situation.

Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi arrived the scene of the crash shortly after the incident and led rescue operation, according to his media aide, Louis Amoke.

Prior to the arrival of the governor, SEMA, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Enugu State Fire Service and the Chairman of Enugu East LGA, Hon. Alex Ugwu, had promptly reported to the accident scene to apply safety measures towards safeguarding lives and property.

The State Government, through SEMA and the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure also provided a crane and manpower for the removal of the vehicle, evacuation of the products and reopening of the road to vehicular traffic and other road users.

The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Barr. Mrs. Nkechi Eneh, who confirmed one causality, urged residents of the area to be calm and law abiding as well as cooperate with the efforts of the state government and the emergency response stakeholders in arresting the situation.
