A Sharia court sitting in Rigasa, Kaduna state, on Wednesday sentenced a 34-year-old woman, Zainab Ibrahim, to six months in prison for burning down the house of her former husband’s new wife.

The judge, Malam Salisu Abubakar-Tureta, sentenced Ibrahim after she pleaded criminal trespass and mischief by fire.

The judge, however, gave the convict the option of a fine of 10,000 naira.

Abubakar-Tureta also ordered him to pay N 131,000 in compensation for burning some household items belonging to Maryam Ramalan.

Earlier, prosecution lawyer Inspector Sambo Maigari told the court that the offense violated the provisions of Articles 174 and 373 of the Sharia Criminal Procedure.

He said the convict confessed that she used gasoline to burn down the new bride’s house out of jealousy.

In her request for mercy, she claimed that she was an obedient wife to her former husband, until he divorced to take another wife.

“He had promised to take me back to my marital home, but did not do so after I had served him and his parents for many years.

“The house belongs to me and my seven children,” she said. (NAN)
