Former first Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Ikeazor Akaraiwe, has condemned the alleged media trial of the 21-year old Miss Chidinma Adaora Ojukwu over the alleged murder of the Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Michael Usifo Ataga.

In a statement issued in Enugu, Akaraiwe faulted the continued exposure to the media of the 300 level student of the department of mass communication at the University of Lagos over her role in Ataga’s death.

In her latest interview with the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, which also went viral on the social media, Chidinma Ojukwu reportedly opened up on how she tied Ataga’s hands while he was high on drugs and asleep, because she wanted to steal from him, before stabbing him to death.

Many argued after the interview that “her confession gives credence to the family’s claim that Usifo’s corpse showed signs of torture, tied hands and a broken neck even before he was stabbed."

But in a statement, Akaraiwe, a former top official of NBA said “the trial by media of a 21 year old Nigerian lady, Miss Chidimma Ojukwu, with all due respect, is both a failure of due process, and a disrespect for the court room institutions.”

The statement read in part: “I do not know if she has lawyers, but changing story after story in the media as the one under reference (the NTA interview) in this statement is, in my humble view, unacceptable and a breach of due process.

“Two possibilities emerge: Her confessions and changing stories in the media may be true, but they may also be made in public after private duress.

“In any case, even if true, presented to the press before trial, makes a fair trial, which is the bedrock of our constitutional democracy, unnecessary.

“Regrettable as the death of Mr. Ataga is, nothing justifies the public trial and conviction of any citizen in the court of public opinion.

“It is my respectful view that her “confessions” and trial in the media are not only disrespectful to the courts of law and justice but undermine her eventual trial.”
