• IPOB not behind the killing of Akunyili, others in Anambra ― Powerful

Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late boss of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dora Akunyili, was murdered by gunmen in Anambra on Tuesday.

Reports on Wednesday said he was shot dead while returning to Enugu from an event to honour his late wife.

His son, Obumneme Akunyili, confirmed the incident to BBC Igbo on Tuesday.

The Advocate had reported the invasion of Eke-Nkpor Uno area of idemili Local Government Area of Anambra State Tuesday afternoon by unidentified gunmen, who killed not less than six persons.

It is likely that the renowned medical practitioner could be one of the persons attacked by the gunmen along Umuoji road.

A gruesome video showing his corpse is being shared on social media. However, the authenticity of the video could not be confirmed by press time.

Sources said that the medical doctor was killed by gunmen suspected to be members of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The militant group has vowed that the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State will not hold and has been blamed for a series of attacks on politicians and their supporters campaigning for the election.

The armed group, which has been accused of attacks on police stations and other security agencies in the region, is also using violent means to enforce a sit-at-home order, which it has decreed for every Monday in the five South-east states.

But in a swift reaction Wednesday, the IPOB debunked the report that it is behind the killing of Dr Chike Akunyili and others in Anambra State.

The group spokesperson Comrade Emma Powerful made this known in an interview with Tribune Online on Wednesday.

According to Powerful, IPOB are not unknown gunmen and regrets why people with evil agendas for the people of Biafra still link IPOB to the murderous group.

Powerful also added that IPOB has no intention of fomenting trouble and warned those linking them to unknown gunmen to desist from such allegations.

“Dora Akunyili’s husband is not our problem and cannot be. Let Anambra people and Biafrans know that we have no business with Mazi Chike Akunyili.

“Those who poisoned his wife are still after the family because they have a mission to finish the family.

“It is unfortunate that those who planned and poison late Dora Akunyili would link IPOB on this man’s death. It is important to note that IPOB are not unknown gunmen.

“We have disassociated ourselves from this group unknown gunmen but people with evil agenda to the people of Biafra are still linking IPOB to this murderous group. IPOB doesn’t know anything about Dora Akunyili’s husband because we are not unknown gunmen.

“ESN was set up to protect and secure our mothers and sisters to go to the farms. Those doing this are trying to do it so our people will support IPOB. But Biafrans are wiser and know what traitors are doing. We want to make it clear to them that IPOB is not behind the killing going on in Anambra State. It is politicians killing people in the state.

“IPOB has no intention of fomenting trouble in our land. Please, we beg those linking us into this madness to desist because they will regret their actions soon. “
