• Denies PDP merger claims

From Ngozi Omah, Awka

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State, Mr Obiora Agbasimalo, who was abducted along with one of his security aides on September 8, 2021 while on his way to Azia community in Ihiala Council Area of the state, is still missing.

The National Organizing Secretary of LP and chairman of its Anambra Governorship Campaign Council, Chief Clement Ojukwu, disclosed this while addressing journalists at the candidate’s Campaign Headquarters in Awka on Tuesday.

The party chief insisted that Agbasimalo’s kidnap and disappearance was politically motivated.

This, he noted, was “because no one thought of abducting him while he worked in the banking industry. But the moment he emerged the governorship candidate and flagbearer of the LP and his popularity soared daily they came and abducted him. So, it is political. It must have been those in the race who felt that the young man’s fast rising political profile was dwarfing and diminishing their efforts. The party therefore believed they must have planned and executed it for him to be out of the way."

The party chieftain confirmed that from proceedings of the series of negotiations, the candidate is very much alive. The intense negotiations involving the family, the party and the security agencies with his abductors have made appreciable and positive progress.

When asked why it was taking too long to liberate the politician or was it financial or administrative hitches that was hampering it, Chief Ojukwu declined further comment, pointing out that every other response would have security implications and may jeopardize the positive successes already made in the negotiations.

Flanked by other National and State Officers of the party as well as  key members of the Campaign Council including Mr Stanley Okoli, Chief Ojukwu denied a festering report trending in the social media and political circles that LP was on the verge of collapsing its structure in favour of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) and its candidate, Chief Valentine Ozigbo.

He wondered how anyone could imagine such idea or move “when we are continuing with our campaigns, believing that our candidate would return safely back to the fold soon...”, Ojukwu stated.

Throwing more light on the position of the party in the alleged merge plot, Ojukwu who represented the national headquarters of LP said there was no truth whatsoever in the story, saying anyone in doubt should go the website of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) where a comprehensive list of the party’s National executive were listed.

"All the names mentioned in the merger plot including one Comrade Joseph Ndirang or Najeem Yasin were never members of LP let alone being national officers of the party," he said.

The party said the press conference became necessary for official record purposes and to put to rest the activities of meddlesome interlopers and detractors trying to attract undeserving public attention perhaps for pecuniary reasons or for reasons best known to them.

Curiously, he confirmed that the party and “the campaign council is continuing to work very hard to win the coming Nov 6 Anambra State Governorship election, who knows, our candidate may be released from captivity then”, Ojukwu stated.
