Chief Senator Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo
• ...urges security agencies to investigate arson
• Insists Amechi Awkunanaw community has no land dispute with Nwobodo
The new Executive Committee of Amechi Awkunanaw town union in Enugu South local government area of Enugu State has faulted a recent online media publication which claimed that land dispute has taken a dangerous dimension in the community.
The community made this known in a statement signed by Mr. Chukwudi Nwankwo Esq., Acting President General Amechi Awkunanaw Development Union and made available to The Advocate in Enugu on Friday.
Describing the distorted facts in the said publication "as the handiwork of an ignoble man who percieve himself as a demagogue; a man who has thrown caution to the wind and feels that community members are like roman plebians", the community said it could not understand the linking of Senator Nwobodo and land dispute to the burning of a lecturers car in the community.
Following the media report, which they claimed was orchestrated by immediate past President General of the town union and a former Commisisoner in the state, Mr. John Egbo, the community leaders said they held a meeting of the Executive of the community presided by Chukwudi Nwankwo Esq, legal practitioner and the acting President General of our union, in order to asertain the veracity or otherwise of the story after which they condemned those behind the dastardly act.
The statement read in part: "We therefore hereby state that our community is peaceful and cannot be involved in such act as arson as a whole as a means of settling any dispute if any.
"That as a community, we do not have any land dispute with Senator Nwobodo since the said land was purely a gift by the community which was given over 40 years ago.
"That the piece of land given to Senator Nwobodo over forty years which one John Egbo and his co-travellers are anchoring théir mischief on was Senator Nwobdo's private business and do not have any reversionary clause in the title document since it was a gift by the community for his contributions to the development of the town.
"Egbo and his co-horts are crying wolf where there's none as the community is poised to ensure peace among her people and all the plans by him and his few disgruntle colleagues towards plunging our community into any breach of peace has been resisted by the peace loving people of Amechi comunity
"The claims of Egbo and co. that the our amiable elder statesman Senator Nwobodo is in dispute with anybody is a mere tapestry of deceit meant to smear the image of our respected elder statesman.
'We are regrettably worried that a person in the status of John Egbo degenerated from the sublime to a radiculous level in a desperate bid to bring the image of our leader Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo to disdain.
"We had at several times asked Egbo who was the former president of our town union to render account of his stewardship to the new town union Executives but he has been evasive and Egbo's recalcitrant stand to rendering that account to the community he served as president of its union, compelled us to assume mischief on his part.
"We the executives of Amechi Development Union hereby suspect foul in the reported case of burning a lecturer's car in his home. We cannot vouch for anybody but we firmly believe that some mischief makers could have hatched such a dirty plan to indict the community.
"However we are calling on the security agencies to come in and investigate the case of arson as reported in the social media.
"We appreciate the Enugu state government for the peace we enjoy and cannot in anyway allow any unwholesome act that will truncate the hard earn peace that the Ugwuanyi administration is making avalaible for Enugu people.
"We also thank the Government of Enugu state for being very pro-active towards ensuring that there's no breach of peace in any community in the state through bold steps to sanction any erring community leader.
"We pledge our loyalty to our local government chairman, Hon Monday Eneh for representing us well and we shall continue to give good and effective followership to his administration.
"Finally we call on the public to be mindful of whatever dealings they have with Egbo and his Co-horts as they no longer represent the interest of Amechi Awkunanaw community.
"As we conclude this statement, we equally call on the people to remain calm in order to contain their would be plan to undo our community."
