The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial district, Chief Victor Umeh, on Friday dedicated the award of the 'NUJ man of the year" bestowed on him by the Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to the Nigerian judiciary.

Speaking at the NUJ summit in Awka, Anambra State capital, Umeh described himself as a creation of the judiciary.

The Senator who said his legal battles to defend his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance and its political cause began over 15 years ago, commended the Nigerian judiciary for standing for the truth, despite the odds.

Umeh was sworn in January this year after three -year of legal battle resulting from the 2015 general elections.

He blamed the roles of  some politicians, journalists and lawyers in  trying to stand against the truth on political matters.

He said, "I have received many awards and chieftaincy titles but I cherished this award from the NUJ. It is encouraging and  I'm humbled."

He asked journalists ,particularly those operating online media to always pursue fairness, truth and objectivity.

He said, "The online media should not be a place to attack people or carry out vendettas. Young people should first pursue education before venturing  into online media practice. You don't float online platform to attack people without  justification.

"From a very turbulent beginning, I can now win awards as man of the year.

"I am a full breed Igbo man, I have lived and schooled in the East all through my life. I am aware of what's happening here; I was also here during the events of the Civil War."

Senator Umeh went through memory lane to recount some remarkable incidents in his career.

"We used APGA to bring Anambra State from the dungeon... APGA has moved Anambra State from its ugly past to an enviable stage in Nigeria.

"APGA victories in Anambra State have remained meritorious, when we were rigged out, we went to the court to demand for justice.

"I have never sponsored any protest or demonstration even when some deemed it necessary. I've won all elections through due process and adhering to the rule of law."

He further admonished journalists on the need to practice  credible journalism especially in reporting political issues.

"Some journalist supports the truth while some does not but my advise is that you all should endeavor to support the truth. Say things the way they truly are.

"Those who were reporting that APGA lost the elections in 2015 are not being fair to democracy.

"When you see me do wrong, criticize me but if you did not see me doing the wrong things, why call me names? Do not call me a thief when you've never seen me steal otherwise, God will judge you for that."

He said the National Assembly had embarked on  legislation that would give the country a robust and enduring democracy , stating that the 2018 budget when signed by the president had the capacity to better the lives of Nigerians.

On the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Umeh condemned using the court to carry out such action, saying it could be counterproductive.

He called on all tiers of government to embark on dialogue in conflict resolution.

Earlier the Anambra State Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Emma Ifesinachi,  had described Umeh as the bastion of democracy and rule of law.

Presenting the award, the NUJ Chairman emphasized Senator Umeh's uncommon strides in promoting good governance and his remarkable support to the media/judiciary pointing out that the resolve to honor him was to express the council's satisfaction over his achievements so far.
