South Korea defeat defending champion Germany 2-0 as both team failed to qualify to last 16, while Sweden thrash Mexico 0-3 to make it through in Group F at 2018 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
Germany are out of the first round since 1938! They’ve never failed to make it out of a World Cup group before!
With six minutes of added time indicated, Young-Gwon Kim (90+2) bundled home from a corner and although the goal was initially ruled out for offside, a VAR review showed the ball coming off the foot of Toni Kroos just before and the decision was reversed.
Five minutes later, South Korea dealt the killer blow as Se-Jong Ju rounded Manuel Neuer – who was high up the field – before setting Heung-Min Son away, and he slotted home into an open net to send Germany crashing out at the World Cup group stage for the first time.
Germany are the third successive World Cup reigning champions to be eliminated in the group stages after Spain in 2014 and Italy in 2010.
The German team haven’t been leading at half-time in any of their group stage matches at the 2018 World Cup finals; the first time that they have failed to do so since 1986.
