The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has expressed concern that the Nigerian government headed by President Muhammadu Buhari is not properly addressing issues concerning religious crisis in the country.

The cleric said this during a virtual presentation with the US Congress in Washington on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria by Islamic extremist groups in the northern region of Nigeria.

Kukah told Congress that although the attack on Christians in Nigeria has been going on for many years now, it has increased over the past 10 years.

He also claimed that extremists, bandits, Fulani shepherds and Boko Haram targeted many schools in the north in particular, Christian schools and “indoctrinate children.” They end up converting these children into wives, cooks, spies, sex slaves, etc. , he lamented.

The Bishop also complained to Congress that President Buhari deliberately appoints people of his ethnicity and religion to key political positions.

“In 2020, they killed some of our priests in the North. They kidnapped our children and forced them to denounce Christianity for Islam. We issued statements and called the government’s attention to our plight, but you see, we have weak institutions.

“The whole North is invaded by armed bandits who launch attacks at will. The president has been nepotistic in his appointments as he only appoints people of the same religion with him in key political positions like security chiefs.

“For the first time in Nigeria, the first three people: the President, the Speaker of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives are all Muslims.

“This has never happened before. We therefore need practical and measured assistance that can help us and our children, ” the cleric cried out.
